Prof. Mutiat Adebanke Balogun

Prof. Mutiat Adebanke Balogun, a native of Offa was born on 17th of February, 1970. She is a Professor in the Department of Home Economics and Food Science, Faculty of Agriculture,  where she has spent almost two decades in teaching, research and administrative experience in the University of Ilorin.

Prof Balogun attended Adeola Model School, Offa and Federal Government College, Ilorin for her primary and secondary education. In the year 1990, she began her tertiary education in Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria as a fresher of BSc. Microbiology. She graduated in 1995 and later proceeded to pursue her post-graduate degrees at the University of Ilorin where she subsequently bagged her MSc. in Industrial and Food Microbiology and Ph.D. in Food Microbiology in 2002 and 2013 respectively.

This erudite scholar joined the services of University of Ilorin in 2008 as an Assistant Lecturer from Federal Polytechnic, Offa, where she professionally launched her career as an academic. As an academic of repute and relentless valour, Prof. (Mrs) Balogun rose through the ranks, up to the very apex of her academic career in 2023 when she was announced Professor of Food Science by the University of Ilorin. Aside from being former Sub-Dean and Acting Head of Department, this better by far alumnus has served the University of Ilorin in various administrative capacities. Her role as a Post-graduate Coordinator at the Department of Home Economics and Food Science earned her an award of Excellence. She was equally a Vice-chairperson of the Unilorin Eatery Board.

Prof. (Mrs.) Balogun’s numerous scholarly publications in top reputable journals, nationally and internationally, reflect her remarkable contributions to her main field of research, ‘Food Microbiology, Biotechnology and Product Development’. It is therefore not surprising that she has attracted different recognitions of excellence. For instance, she was part of the team that won the Unilorin Laboratroy Product grant for commercial production of ginger-spiced kulikuli and unripe plantain-poundo yam in 2018. This is in addition to the prestigious international grant she attracted, courtesy of N.G. Patel, India, just to mention a few.  Prof. (Mrs.) Balogun has successfully supervised more than one hundred undergraduate thesis and eight Master dissertations.

Prof Mutiat A. Balogun  is a Chartered  Food Scientist and belongs to many professional bodies within and outside Nigeria.

Prof. Mutiat Balogun is the Treasurer of the Offa Professors’ Forum.
